SLAM FAQS:

What is a poetry slam?

Slam poetry is a type of competition where people read their poems without props, costumes, or music. After performing, they receive scores (0-10) from randomly selected judges. The judges can be anyone: they don’t even need to be poets! Scores are awarded based on how much each judge likes a poem. The purpose of this judging process is to make poetry participatory for everyone. Slam poetry doesn’t need to be a specific form of poetry.

What do I need to bring?

• $22 entrance fee (can purchase tickets ahead of time online, or pay at the door. Both cash and card payments accepted.)
• 2 poems, each less than 3 minutes.
• Friends! The bigger the audience, the better the show!

What are the rules?

• No props, no costumes, no animal acts, no nudity.
• No booing.
• Keep your poem under 3 minutes and 10 seconds or you'll lose points.

CONTENT WARNING: poetry slams often deal with hard topics such as domestic violence, sexual abuse, grief and death, social issues, etc.

Ticket sale proceeds goes to the Writers Guild of Alberta and the Calgary Poetry Slam.

Taking it ALL Off

General Audience (Age 12+)

Taking It ALL Off is not about getting naked… mostly. It's an intimate voyage of self-discovery through the issues of yoyo weight loss and feelings of being unworthy of love, to the harsh reality of slowly losing a partner to dementia. This emotional journey explores the fight against bureaucracy, becoming a caregiver, and the heart-wrenching experience of coping with grief, while trying to keep an ever-increasing burden precariously balanced on your shoulders. Join me in an unvarnished and very human journey to find joy and meaning from the ashes of a life that was “supposed to be”.

You're Driving Me Crazy

General Audience (Age 13+)

Sibling dynamics are hard. Cramming them into a small car that smells like old McDonalds’ fries on a six-hour road trip can make them even harder. Sisters Jen and Penny seem to have found themselves in that very car, and to make it worse – they’re late. Terribly late to a wedding they don’t want to attend. Watch as a pleasant drive down memory lane turns into a disaster of cosmic proportions, as perspectives clash, secrets are spilled, and tensions bubble over, all within their blue 2006 Honda Civic. Buckle your seatbelts, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride.

seaMAN

General Audience (Age 13+)

A dynamic, revenge-fueled sea-venture featuring the horror-comedy hijinks of a weird old captain with an even weirder past. A nautical nightmare of text and physical comedy, centering one salty sailor against the entire ocean. Whether it's storms, seagulls, or mermaids, trouble finds SeaMAN everywhere. His stories hold you captive as he steers you further from the safety of harbor. By award-winning Fringe veterans Amica Hunter (of A Little Bit Off) and Bruce Ryan Costella, comes a one man show… by two.
